There are many different nicknames that witches of the past used to refer to themselves. Some were given to them by their fellow villagers, others came about through a personal decision or revelation. All of these names have fascinating meanings and origins, as well as some interesting stories behind them!

The use of nicknames is not exclusive to witches, but it’s an interesting way for us as modern-day folk to be brought into the world of witchcraft – a time and place that we can only imagine. The following list includes some common witchy names throughout history, with their meanings listed afterwards:
