I was once again tasked with sorting through the thousands of emails and texts that come in my inbox during my day. The emails I receive contain information that is very important to me and I am trying to figure out what to do with it. I have to prioritize it in order to be able to filter it later. The emails are from people I respect and people I respect want to help me. There is a lot to sort through but I am in the process of sorting it out.
I usually start my emails with a short paragraph explaining what topic I want to discuss. It might be a tip on how to make a sandwich or a list of questions I’d like to ask a potential employer. I like to ask myself these questions throughout the day in different areas of my life. I usually want to focus on a certain area for a while until I feel that I have a clear idea of what it is I want to say. Then I start my emails with a question to myself.
Most people I know think that if you start a new email with an open-ended question, your readers won’t really engage with it. But I’ve been trying to think about that. I usually want to start a new email with a question because I think it is an excellent way to get my readers to think about me, but I’m not always sure if I’m thinking about what I want to say.
I think that the best way to engage with email lists is to start with something that is close to what you want to say. If you ask a question about your topic, then you are likely to find that your readers don’t want to read the rest of the email. They want to engage with the subject line of the email. So, one way to start an email is to have something that is close to the subject line, but not necessarily what you want to say.

I think this is the only thing I can suggest. Get your email to the point where you are asking for help. Try getting the name of the person you are asking about in your subject line, and then say, “I need help with this.” Next, mention the person’s name in your body of the email. Finally, say what you need help with (or ask for help, whatever works for you).

If you want to avoid the spam filters and get your emails through to a real person, there are several other ways to get the word out about your request. You can use a service like MailChimp to list your emails, or use a service like Constant Contact that will send a mass email out to anyone who subscribes.
For some reason I thought it would be great if this was included in the FAQ, but I’m not sure why. It’s just a really cool idea and I’d love to see what other people think.
