A good night’s sleep is hard to come by these days. The average American sleeps only 7.5 hours a day, and most of that time is spent sleeping. Yet this number, which you probably agree with anyway, is still considered so important that the American Academy of Sleep Medicine has been campaigning to get the number of people who sleep eight or more hours higher. In the UK, the National Sleep Foundation reports that a good night’s sleep is 10 to 12 hours.

The number of people in America who sleep fewer than eight hours a day is almost impossible to compare to the number of people who sleep eight hours a day. Yet you can make a fair comparison between those who sleep fewer than seven hours a day and those who sleep seven hours a day. This is true because the number of Americans who are sleep deprived is larger than that of the rest of the population.

The reason why this is the case is because Americans are the only people on Earth who are biologically programmed to sleep longer hours than they could possibly need. According to research done by the National Sleep Foundation, only a tiny percentage of us are waking up at the same time every day (around 8%) and, similarly, most of us are waking up at the same time every night (more than 96%).
